The first morning of a five day photo shoot in Shell, Wyoming at The Hideout Ranch, I was treated to one of the most beautiful sights I have seen in my life. The temperature was in the single digits, and the air was still and cold. The winter sun was coming up behind tall cottonwood trees, whose branches were rimmed in ice. Wranglers moved wild horses into the pasture for their morning feed. The breath of the horses was visible, as was the steam from their bodies. As the sun rose higher, fog started to form above the snow and rays of light filtered through the trees.
